"Look up and be alert to what is going on around Christ-that’s where the action is. See things from His perspective." Col. 3:2 (MSG)
"Seeing things from His perspective…" When Jesus looks at the situations in my life, what does He see? What is going on around Him?
When Jesus was teaching His disciples to pray, He told them to pray, "Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven…"
So what exactly is going on in heaven that I am to pray about to "come, and be done on earth"?
As I was thinking and praying about this, these are a few things that I know about heaven-
- There is no lack; there is always enough of everything that is needed! Peace, joy, strength, time, food, rest, love, grace…the list goes on forever! There is NO LACK of ANYthing that is needed!
- Jesus is King and is over everything; all things bow to Him, and satan and his perceived "kingdom" is under Jesus’ feet! There is no question in heaven of Whose Kingdom is in rule! (Here’s a bonus thought-the Bible tells us that satan is a lie and the father of lies. If he is lies, imagine the chaos in his ranks! I have way too often given him too much territory in my mind! He doesn’t even have a
kingdom. He has mass chaos.)
- Assignments aren’t being missed in heaven. Things are getting done and set in place. Nothing is late; everything is on time.
- There is no darkness or sadness or sickness or disappointment.
- There is rich relationship with Jesus. There is no question about Who He is for each one personally. He is what heaven is all about!
While I was processing this, I heard a song about the incarnation of Jesus. It hit me what it looked like when Jesus was born. He looked like any other baby-"lying helpless, dependant, unable to stand on His own, unable to do anything at all."* BUT that wasn’t the greatest reality!!! He was the promised Messiah. He was the King of Kings. He was the Deliverer. He was the Saviour of the world. But anyone looking at His birth with only their natural eyes and mind saw only a baby like any other baby.
Mary, the shepherds, the wisemen, Simeon, and Anna saw Jesus for Who He was. All of them had either a supernatural encounter that revealed to them who Jesus was, or they had such a close relationship with the Father that they were listening to what He was saying. Either way, they were listening and open to hearing and believing something that was only visible in the spiritual realm, not the physical.
I think that what is going on in heaven is a greater reality that what is going on here on earth. If Jesus really is the Victor, and I don’t doubt that for a minute, then heaven is a greater reality even if I can’t see it. Why is it so hard for me to live in that reality then? How do I tap into that greater reality and live it here? How do I believe for heaven’s reality instead of being bogged down by what feels true?
It figures in with what I’ve been reading in Colossians 3 about setting my heart and mind on Christ and things above and not on things of earth. How does that get resolved? How do I live in the greater reality?
Paul says to "pursue the things over which Christ presides…be alert to what is going on around Him…and see things from His perspective." If I take every area of my life and choose to try to see it from God’s perspective, I’m going to be closer to the truth about it than if I look at it thru my limited, earth-centered perspective.
Isaiah 40:31 is on my heart-“but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” It makes me believe that there are definitely possibilities for living way above my day to day circumstances.
Here’s the challenge-in what part of your life do you need to ask Jesus what is happening in heaven for you in that situation? Where do you need to choose to believe in the greater reality for you? Where do you need to break the power of lies by declaring the truth and living it out? Where do you need to shift your normal?
Maybe some of you want to make the choice to move into back into relationship again with Jesus. You might know that you haven’t been making choices that will allow you to hear Him when He speaks. Or maybe you’ve never had a relationship with Him and want to know more about what that looks like.

It’s TIME for us to live in our greater reality!!!
