"Your tongue has the power of life and death. Those who love to talk will eat the fruit of their words." Pro. 18:21
The words that come out of my mouth have power in them-power to bring life or death to the people who hear them. We talk every day to many people in many different situations. We talk all the time, so keeping the reality of how powerful words are in front of us all the time often gets lost in the daily-ness of our use of words.
I can remember times when the impact of others’ words bought me much hope and joy and other times when their words crushed my spirit and brought despair and shame.
Sometimes right in the moment, I can see the impact of my words on my hubby and children, and other times, I discover long after the fact what fruit is growing in their lives because of words I’ve spoken.
Let’s be real-we KNOW that words impact, because we have experienced their effects from other people. But it can be quite easy to conveniently forget when we’re thinking about how our own words might be effecting others.
Our words matter. We can speak life and encouragement and identity into others with our words, or we can tear them down in ways that make it incredibly difficult for them to believe that we care about them. Not only does this hurt them, it hurts God’s heart. He created them with a definite, major purpose, and if we don’t partner with Him in building people up, who on this green earth will?
Either way, whether we use words to bring life or death, we will "eat the fruit of our words" as is stated in Pro. 18:21.
Here’s a couple more truths from Proverbs about how our words impact-
…"rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tonngue of the wise brings healing." Pro. 12:18
"A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit." Pro. 15:4
Your words carry power!
How will you use them today? Will you bring encouragement and hope around yourself today or will you bring despair?
